God Gives Solomon Wisdom

Sermon Notes (Click to Expand)

1 Kings 2:1-4, 3:3-15; Matthew 7:24-27

1 Kings 3:12(NIV): I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be.

“The wisdom of Solomon” is something we still talk about today.

Matthew 7:24(NIV): 24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.

Jesus tells us there are two parts to attaining wisdom:

· Hearing his words - 1 Kings 3:7-9, Matthew 7:24-25

· Putting them into practice - 1 kings 3:14, Matthew 7:26-27

Solomon knew more clearly than anyone in human history the source of wisdom.

Proverbs 9:10-12(NIV): The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. For through wisdom your days will be many, and years will be added to your life. If you are wise, your wisdom will reward you; if you are a mocker, you alone will suffer.

Sadly, in his later life, Solomon didn’t practice what he preached.

Ecclesiastes 1:12-14(NIV): I, the Teacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem. I applied my mind to study and to explore by wisdom all that is done under the heavens. What a heavy burden God has laid on mankind! I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

Are you committed to knowing God’s Word?

Are you committed to putting it into practice?

James 1:22(NIV): Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.
